All The Kids

My Dad took Jared to the cabin for the weekend and it was such a nice break for me. Plus, Jared absolutely LOVES going anywhere with Grandpa, and especially the cabin. We told him a couple days before the trip and it was all he could talk about. "Grandpa's coming to pick me up, Mommy." "Yes, I know, but not for a few days." Pause. "I'm going to the cabin with Grandpa, Mommy." Sigh. At least he's excited to go. I'd rather be pestered for a few days than have to pry him off of me when the time to leave comes. Auntie Karen got the worst of it. I was teaching on Friday, which is when Dad came to pick Jared up. He was coming in the morning, but not until later in the morning. So until he came, all Karen heard was: "I think I hear Grandpa!" "Grandpa's here!" "Grandpa's coming to get me." "I'm going to the cabin." "I'm watching for Grandpa."
When he finally did arrive, and was putting Jared's car seat into place, Jared was watching out the window and declared, "Auntie Karen, I just can't WAIT!" She said it was like he really couldn't wait anymore! They had a great time, snowmobiling, hot-tubbing, clearing snow, making fires outside... I'm so glad they are so bonded. I'm sure it has a lot to do with Mom dying. From that moment, my Dad took great comfort in his first grandchild. Jared proved to be the light in the darkness during those terrible first days and continues to be just that. And Grandpa Unger is certainly Jared's hero.
So we were left with just our little angel at home. I don't think she knew quite what to do without Jared around. She's not used to spending long periods of time without him. But we had a nice girls afternoon with my cousin Joy, on Saturday. I think she kinda got used to be the sole centre of attention and rather liked it! She hasn't had that type of focus since she was a newborn - sort of sad, actually.
Auntie Carrie took her for the night on Friday, giving Ryan and I time to ourselves. It was so relaxing. We went to John's for supper and then saw "Taken" - really well done and really sobering movie. Then, on the spur-of-the-moment, Ryan suggested renting a hotel room for the night, so we did just that. Let me tell you, it was SO NICE to not have to worry about cleaning anything up or making breakfast the next morning (the room included a hot breakfast). Just being able to leave the bed unmade and leave towels wherever was a nice luxury. I love hotels. I always have and I always will. And our room had a king-size bed. Ahhhh, I miss our king-size bed. We really appreciate Steve and Colleen's queen-size bed (much better than a double!!) but you just can't compare anything to a king! Anyone about to get married: SPLURGE AND GET A KING-SIZE BED!!!
Ayda is also fighting pink-eye. She's not contagious anymore, but we still have to give her eyedrops. Man, does she have strong eye muscles! Trying to pry those eyes open is a huge challenge! I'm scared of popping an eye out! It was actually good timing, as Jared wasn't around for the contagious stage.
House is going well. Drywall should be complete this week, as well as the plumbing and heating rough-in. We have heat in the house. House wrap should be done next week. We should be able to pour the basement floor this week. Yeah! I haven't downloaded pics from today, but will soon, so stay tuned for that.

that is so great that you and Ryan and some time together, without the kids, love them, but couples definitely need that time.

I can't wait to splurge on a king-sized bed!

That is very neat about your dad and Jared's times alone together. Sounds awesome!

Ahhh, that sounds so wonderful! And I know medicine is great and I'm very thankful for it and all, but why does it have to be so hard to administer sometimes? Too bad everything can't be put into gummy bear shape and flavour, including pink eye treatment (and chest x-rays, for that matter)

Wow! Go Ryan...suggesting a hotel room. That gets the moment going:) Sounds like you had a great evening and I'm glad for you guys. And there is nothing quite like the relationship between grandpa and grandson. Can't be explained - it's just awesome!
